Last week, Somali Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble dismissed NISA Deputy DG Abdullahi Kulane and another security official after they blocked politicians from traveling to Gedo. Roble emphasized that the Somali constitution guarantees freedom of movement across the country. Kulane, a close ally of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo from the Marehan Reer Aw Diini clan, has been accused of obstructing electoral processes and holding a former regional governor hostage in Mogadishu. While the legality of the dismissals remains unclear, the move places electoral security under the full control of PM Roble, who aims to safeguard the delicate Gedo deal and restore confidence with the Jubaland administration. Villa Somalia, including DG Fahad Yasin and President Farmaajo, has remained publicly silent, likely avoiding confrontation with the PM. Critics, however, suggest the firing may be symbolic, designed to placate opposition candidates and international observers rather than fundamentally alter NISA’s control over the elections.
